OCR: When Leonardo climbed to the top of Mon Boso (Monte Rosa) in the Alps, he noticed that the air overhead appeared darker than it did from lower elevations: "This mountain towers to so great a height as almost to pass above all the clouds .... And I saw the atmosphere dark overhead, and the rays of the sun striking the mountain had far more brightness than in the plains below, because less thick- ness of atmosphere lay between the summit of the mountain and the sun." (4r) Leonardo believed that this phenomenon confirmed Aristotle's theory that fire, the sphere of darkness, lay beyond the sphere of air. :
